Scared to Start Something New? Read This First.
Have you ever had an idea that makes you so excited you could burst? For five glorious minutes, you are ready to take on the world. Then your brain joins the conversation.
What if it does not work? What if people laugh? What if I am not enough?
And just like that, your brilliant idea gets shoved into a box labelled MAYBE ONE DAY. Sound familiar?
Why Are We So Scared of Starting Something New?
I have spent over 30 years building businesses, creating programmes and speaking to thousands of people. I have achieved a Guinness World Record. My work has reached 54 countries. But starting a completely new chapter as a motivational speaker and author?
That has brought its own interesting conversations with my brain! Not because I am frightened of getting on stage. I love that bit. It is the uncertainty of building something new, and here is what I have realised.
We want the confidence of someone who has done something 100 times before we have even done it once.
How does that make sense?
Imagine refusing to learn to drive because you could not already drive! Yet we do exactly that with our dreams.
How to Overcome the Fear of Starting Something New
Here is my Keep It Simple Approach.
1. Stop asking what if it goes wrong.
What if it goes RIGHT?
What if this becomes the best decision you have ever made?
Give the wonderful possibilities some airtime too.
2. Make the first step ridiculously small.
Want to write a book? Write a paragraph.
Want a new career? Send one email.
Want to get fitter? Put your trainers on.
A five year plan and a colour coded spreadsheet is not needed.
You need to begin.
3. Stop collecting evidence of your failures.
Why can we remember something embarrassing from 2009 but forget the amazing things we achieved last Tuesday? Start collecting evidence that you are capable. Because you are. What if you start and it does not work?
Well, you will learn something. You might change direction. You might try again. You might discover something even better. But what if you never try? That is the question I would be asking.
As a motivational speaker, I meet women with extraordinary ideas who are waiting for permission to begin. Here is yours. Being fearless is not a necessity. You just need to stop letting fear make all your decisions.
Your Keep It Simple Challenge
What is ONE thing you have been putting off? Now, what could you do about it in the next 24 hours? Not Monday. Not next month. Not when Mercury has finished doing whatever Mercury is apparently doing.
TODAY.
Because a year from now, you might be very glad you started. Go on. I am cheering you on!
